Dear ,
Licorice is one of the most widely consumed herbs in the world - the Egyptians considered it a cure-all and the Chinese include it in more formulas than any other single herb. It is included in The School of Natural Healing's 100 Herb List and Dr. Christopher encouraged people to store a supply of Licorice root.
For the next few weeks we are going to learn more about this great herb. If you have any experiences with Licorice we invite you to share them on our blog at http://articles.herballegacy.com.
We have a reader contributed recipe this week - Mazidra from Jessica Sellers - it is a delicious, healthy and easy recipe. Try it out and let us know what you think!

ARTICLE: The benefits of the use of Licorice in Herbal Preparations - Part I
RECIPE: Mazidra

Licorice is very soothing and softens the mucous membranes of the throat, lungs, stomach, intestines, and at the same time cleanses any inflamed mucous membrane that needs immune system support. This is why Licorice is found in so many cough and sore throat medications. It reduces the irritation in the throat and yet has an expectorant action. It is the saponins (detergent-like action) that loosen the phlegm in the respiratory tract so that the body can expel the mucus. It is a potent healing agent for tuberculosis, where its effects have been compared to hydrocortisone. For colds and flu, Licorice can be combined with stimulating herbs such as cayenne or ginger to intensify the effect. For sore throat and irritated bronchials, Licorice is more effective when combined with Horehound or Mullein.
Licorice also has a soothing and healing effect on the stomach and digestive tract. It softens, soothes, lubricates and nourishes the entire intestinal tract with a formula as simple as 40% Licorice root and 60% Slippery Elm.

3 cups water
1 cup lentils
1 onion, chopped
1 bay leaf
1/8 tsp thyme
dash of oregano
salt and pepper to taste
1.5 cups brown rice
Water to cook
Another onion, sliced
1 tbsp canola oil
1 tomato
1 avocado
Shredded lettuce
In the morning, soak lentils and rice (separately) in water.
At dinnertime, drain them each. Cook the rice (I use 2.5 cups water with 1.5 cups brown rice on stovetop).
While the rice is cooking, boil the lentils in 3 cups water with the chopped onion and seasonings, stirring occasionally. It takes about 35-45 minutes if the lentils were presoaked.
While the rice and lentils are cooking, chop tomatoes, peel and chop avocado, and shred lettuce. Sautée the sliced onions in canola oil.
When everything is ready, make haystacks in this order: rice, lentils,
sautéed onions, tomato, avocado, and shredded lettuce. Sprinkle salt and
pepper to taste and enjoy!
Serves about 4.
