Herbal Legacy Newsletter June 18, 2008
Published: Wed, 06/18/08
There are exciting things happening at The School of Natural Healing - there are 28 students here receiving instruction from the top herbalists in the nation - including David Christopher, Dr. Warfa, Christopher Hobbs, Dr. Duke and Sandra Ellis ("Dr. Mom"). At the end of the instruction and successful testing period The School will have 28 new Master Herbalists! Good luck to each of the prospective Master Herbalists as they go through this week. After the seminar we will post some pictures and video online for you to enjoy.
We are excited to welcome a new writer to our staff here at Herbal Legacy - Master Herbalist and "Herbal Teacher" Jared Tropple. Today Jared talks about a healing herb - Calendula, and how to make a Calendula salve.
We are so happy to see that people are reading our newsletters and asking questions. Please feel free to ask any questions about things that have been written or things you want to be written.
Jerrie had this question about last week's article (to read the article go to http://articles.herballegacy.com):
"Hello. In today's newsletter you recommend 1/4 t. cayenne in 4-6 oz distilled water, etc. Please tell me the amount to use as I have cayenne powder that is 275,000 Heat Units (Dr. Schultz) and I don't know how much to use each time with that much heat. Can you also use cayenne extract? How many drops per 4 oz. water each time? I have Dr. Christopher's and Dr. Schultz liquid. This evening I put about 1/8 tea. in 4 oz. water of the powder I have and I am not so sure if I did the right thing. Thank you, Jerrie"
Here is what Jared said:
"This is something that is asked of me quite frequently. My opinion is different than Richard Schultz on the subject. I believe that 40,000 H.U. is sufficient for both first aid and general use. It is my opinion that you only use a hotter cayenne to trigger your natural endorphins as a pain killer. If you were to use an extract I would start with about 1/4 dropper depending on the heat and work my way up to 1 full dropper. The beautiful thing about cayenne is that it's pretty evident if you have used too much. You aren't doing anything wrong. No matter how much or how little you take, cayenne is a great addition to your daily herbal regimen."
Please know that we are happy to clarify anything written in our newsletters - so if you have a question, be sure to ask!
Until next week - be healthy and happy-

Calendula has been used since the Roman times for healing wounds. It is bright yellow to a beautifully brilliant orange and contains volatile oils, tannins, and resins that help with inflammation and speed healing. It also has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties.
Calendula has been used in countless salves as a primary ingredient for skin rashes, diaper rashes, minor cuts, chapped lips, and minor burns. A strong tea made from the flowers makes an excellent foot soak for athlete's foot, a facial wash for acne, or a mouth wash for canker sores.
To make a Calendula Salve first make an infused oil by covering the 1/4 cup of flowers in 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil in a closed jar for at least two weeks. After two weeks the oil should have turned a darker yellowish color. Strain off the flowers through a muslin cloth and pour oil into a stainless steel or Pyrex pot. Heat oil on low and grate about 1/8 cup of beeswax. After it has melted take off heat and add 40 drops of essential oils (I would add Lavender). Pour into the jar you intend to keep the salve in and store in a dark, dry place. This salve should last at least a year if not longer if stored properly
Not only is it fun to make your own herbal medicine but you can tailor it to your specific needs. Calendula is a wonderful herb to add to many herbal formulas
Jared is a Master Herbalist graduate of The School of Natural Healing. Because of his passion and gift for herbal medicine, he was asked to manage Dr. Christopher's Herb Shop. During this time people from all around the state heard of him and came for his ability to use herbs to heal. People started calling from around the country in order to be taught how to help themselves. Jared now manages his own business and has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs for his herbal knowledge and experience. We are sure you will enjoy learning from Jared in today's article.

DIRECTIONS:
Waffles: Cook on a waffle iron, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Pancakes: Pour 1/2 cup of batter into a hot, lightly oiled frying pan. When bubbles rise through the middle of the pancake and break on the top, flip the pancake and cook until browned underneath. (Note: Test the pan before cooking the pancakes by throwing a few drops of water onto it. If the water jumps around and then disappears, the pan is at the correct temperature.)
Top with berries or other fruit and 100% pure maple syrup.
Notes:
This recipe takes less than five minutes to prepare, not including cooking time.
You must leave lumps in the batter. Waffle or pancake batter which is too smooth will spread out very thin on the waffle iron or pan, and the result will be a rubbery, tough cake.
The batter doesn't freeze well but can be refrigerated for a short time. Waffles can be made in large quantities and frozen for future use; this is a good option if your waffle iron is small!
Pancake suggestion: Put small slices of banana or apple onto the top of each pancake before flipping, and dribble a small amount of batter onto the pieces of fruit. Finish cooking the pancake according to the recipe.
As shown, recipe makes roughly four waffles; the number of pancakes will vary according to size. Recipe can easily be multiplied for more waffles/pancakes.
While Dr. Christopher advocated nothing but fruit until lunch, there are days when you may really want some waffles or pancakes. These waffles (or pancakes) are a tasty way to start the day. The batter is especially tasty when you add berries such as blueberries, marionberries, raspberries, blackberries, loganberries, etc. to the mix.
INGREDIENTS:
Mix together the mashed banana and water. Add dry ingredients and mix, leaving lumps in the batter.
