A recent news story about a cyclosporiasis outbreak caught my attention. As I read about the increase in cases, my mind immediately went to herbs. If I encountered a parasite like this, what would I reach for?
According to the CDC, cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People become infected through contaminated food or water. While it is generally not life-threatening and most healthy people recover without treatment, anyone who has experienced its watery diarrhea and digestive upset knows it is certainly something you'd rather avoid.
An outbreak is defined as a sudden increase in cases of a disease above the expected baseline. In the case of cyclosporiasis, the CDC expects to see an increase of cases during summer months, between May 1 – August 31 each year and defines this as the annual cyclosporiasis season. While cases fluctuate from year to year, reported infections have increased significantly this season compared to
recent years. While Cyclospora is only one type of parasite, the news story reminded me of a much broader principle: herbs have long been used to support the body whenever parasites are a concern.
As a Master Herbalist my first thought when reading about this situation is to turn to vermifuge herbs and foods that specifically support the
body in dealing with parasites. Garlic, pumpkin seeds, and papaya seeds are some of the first foods I'd reach for. I already eat pumpkin seeds almost every day, but if parasites were a concern I'd make sure to pick up a fresh papaya—and yes, I'd eat the spicy little seeds too! Fresh garlic pressed into soup or tossed into a salad is another simple way to support the body. I never cease to be amazed that the foods growing in our gardens and the herbs God created can provide exactly the kind of
support our bodies need.
The first herbs that come to my mind when dealing with parasites are wormwood, black walnut, tansy, male fern, cloves, oregano – and most of these are found in Dr. Christopher’s VF Syrup, my favorite formula for dealing with parasites of any kind. I have used this formula for myself and even gave it to my children
when they were small. It’s such a safe and effective formula and works like a charm!
Dr. Christopher’s protocol for the VF Syrup Parasite Cleanse:
- Take one teaspoon of the VF Syrup morning and night for three days.
- On the fourth day drink one cup of senna/peppermint tea or take 2 capsules of Dr. Christopher’s Quick Colon Part 1 capsules.
- Rest for 2 days.
- Repeat the entire procedure 2 more times. (Repeating the procedure ensures that parasites are being targeted
through their entire life cycle.)
Some people worry about taking senna because it is a cathartic herb, a strong laxative. It is used in this procedure to quickly and effectively eliminate the parasite die off that occurs when using the VF Syrup. Equal parts of senna and peppermint will soothe the digestive tract and relieve any griping.
One of the things I love most about herbs is that they work with the body, supporting while gently cleansing. My favorite thing about the Dr. Christopher formulas is that he created them to be used by everyone, young and old. VF Syrup is no exception. Anyone can use this safe and effective procedure anytime parasites are suspected in the body. Eliminating parasites helps reduce
inflammation, improve digestive health, enhance absorption in the digestive tract, support the immune system and allows the body to restore gut microbiome balance.
News stories can sometimes make us feel anxious, but they can also remind us to prepare. Parasites are nothing new, and thankfully nature has a whole apothecary of
wonderful herbs and foods to help support our bodies when we encounter them.
Wash your produce. Grow what you can. Nourish your body every day. Learn about herbs and begin building your own personal apothecary. Mine definitely includes Dr. Christopher's VF Syrup.
One of the greatest gifts my education through the School of Natural Healing has given me is confidence. Instead of worrying when health concerns make the headlines, I know there are simple, natural ways to support my body. That knowledge is empowering – and it’s a gift I’m grateful to share.
