We recently had a reader ask how to handle nosebleeds. It’s an important question because while a nosebleed is often treated as a nuisance, it’s actually a signal from the body.
The
Emergency Protocol: Cayenne
When a bleed is active, the first herb I think of is Cayenne. Whether it’s an internal or external hemorrhage, Cayenne is the master regulator. It quickly equalizes blood pressure across the entire system. To get it working fast, use a tincture or stir a teaspoon of Cayenne into a half glass of warm water.
In Herbal Home Health Care, Dr. Christopher explains:
"Cayenne regulates blood pressure so it is the same in the feet as in the head or any other part of the body. This takes the heavy
pressure off the hemorrhaging area and allows for quick coagulation."
My children all know the drill. They actually prefer the Cayenne in water over the tincture and have been fixing it for themselves since they were old enough to reach the cups. The heat is a small price to pay—the bleeding usually stops by the time you count to
ten.
The Root Cause: Calcium Deficiency
Getting hit in the nose is one thing, but what about "spontaneous" nosebleeds? If they are happening for no apparent reason, you aren't looking at an accident; you're looking at
a deficiency.
Dr. Christopher taught:
"Unless it is from an injury, nosebleed results from a calcium deficiency... of course, it does not matter how much calcium is in the body if
one is hit in the nose with a good blow; bleeding will start."
The weakness in the blood vessel walls stems from the body’s inability to utilize calcium. To address this, we use the Herbal Calcium formula. This isn't a "supplement" in the modern sense; it is a combination of herbal foods like Nettle,
Horsetail, and Oat Straw that provide the trace elements necessary for the body to actually use the calcium it already has.
Strengthening the System
To stop the cycle of recurring bleeds, you need to
strengthen the capillaries and blood vessels. You can do this through:
- Herbal Foods: Utilize the Herbal Calcium Capsule or Extract daily. For children, the Kid-e-Calc extract is the ideal delivery method.
- The "Thinking" Herb: Dr. Christopher included a small amount of
Lobelia in these formulas to act as a catalyst, ensuring the nutrients go exactly where the body needs them most.
- Astringents: Herbs like Bayberry or Oak Bark help tone and tighten the vascular walls.
- Daily Maintenance: Taking Cayenne daily,
as Dr. Christopher taught, keeps the entire circulatory system—including the delicate vessels in the nose—resilient and strong.
I am constantly grateful for herbs that handle both the immediate emergency and the long-term rebuilding of the body.
