We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Steven Foster. He passed away of unknown causes in his home in Arkansas on January 17, 2022.
Steven Foster was a self-taught botanist and master of botanical photography – his pictures of herbs are truly works of art. If you have seen a beautiful picture of herbs or medicinal plants in books, articles, or websites there is a high probability it was taken by Steven Foster. He had an eye for capturing the essence and life of the plant. We are
blessed to have some of his beautiful photographs included in Dr. Christopher’s 100 Herb Syllabus – it is truly a treasure.
Steven authored or co-authored 19 books and hundreds of articles on herbs and medicinal plants. His book on Echinacea was one of the first books written on this immune stimulating herb since 1917. His work on Peterson Field Guides and other titles continues to educate and bless the lives of herbal students everywhere.
We were fortunate to have had him share his incredible knowledge of botany at our Master Herbalist Seminar, and to have worked with him on additional photography for current projects. I last spoke with him in September, as we were searching for some additional photos of a few herbs. He was excited to share new pictures he had just taken of the male and
female flowers of Sassafras that weren’t even up on his site yet. They were exactly what we were looking for! He spoke fondly of his new granddaughter and sent a picture of them together.
He had a kind soul, and I have a deep respect for his work, his willingness to share, and his love of plants. I am inspired by his motivation and all he accomplished as a self-taught photographer and botanist. Steven Foster is truly an inspiration in the herbal world and will be missed.
