Herbal Antivirals, Natural Remedies for Emerging & Resistant Viral Infections
By Jo Francks, MH
This book is our most recent staff pick. We like it because it is packed full of information on viruses and what can be done to assist the body in getting rid of them.
It has information on:
Treatment protocols for influenza, enteroviruses, encephalitis, SARS, dengue, the herpes group, Ebola, Zika, and even a section on coronaviruses. Although this book was written before the current epidemic of coronavirus the information and protocols can be just as effective for the Covid 19 virus.
It is a comprehensive guide to the most potent natural antiviral herbs and gives effective ways to strengthen the immune system.
Viruses are different from bacteria in that an antibiotic will not be effective to treat them. We don’t promote the use of antibiotics because of the wonderful qualities of the herbs that can be used for bacterial infections. Those same herbs are also effective against viruses. This book goes into detail on many herbs that are very effective against many
different viruses.
One herb I was happy to read about was boneset. This herb has a long history of folk use for fevers and body aches but hasn’t been in the limelight of herbal powerhouses for recent viruses. The author says “the herb is bitter and about as much fun to drink as a tea made from earwax. Honey helps considerably…and if you have the kind of flu where you can’t
taste anything.” Has anyone lost their sense of taste lately? That might be an advantage when the need for boneset is present.
Build your immunity and protect yourself with broad-spectrum herbal treatment. Stephen Harrod Buhner profiles the plants that have proven most effective in fighting viral infections and provides in-depth instructions for preparing and using formulations to address the most common infections and to strengthen your immunity, safely and naturally.

Ingredients:
4 cups water plus more as needed
1 1/2 ounces sliced astragalus root
2 cups brown rice
Directions:
Combine the water and astragalus, bring to boil, and simmer for 2 hours, covered. Remove from the heat and let stand overnight. Remove the astragalus and add enough water to bring the broth volume back up to 4 cups. Add the rice, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer covered, until done, approximately 1 hour. Use this rice as you would any rice, as a base for meals throughout the week.
